This book is odd in that everything presaged in the first chapter finally comes true at the end but there is an awful lot of adventures stuck in between. Characters develop little in depth throughout. I would characterize it as a light read.Product details

The Lighthouse Robert Michael Ballantyne 9781374970168 Books Reviews
I was increasingly frustrated the more I read of The Lighthouse. It is naive in its treatment of the real story of the building of The Bell Rock Lighthouse, and is extremely repetitive in its interruptions of the narrative in order to "send a message." But then, it IS a boy's story from another time. Stylistically, it is quaint. In the end, having stuck with it for about two thirds of its length, I gave up on it and turned instead to the Stevensons' story which is gripping and eye-opening.
This book is odd in that everything presaged in the first chapter finally comes true at the end but there is an awful lot of adventures stuck in between. Characters develop little in depth throughout. I would characterize it as a light read.
