Jim Murray Whisky Bible 2011 by Murray Jim Paperback Jim Murray 9780955472954 Books
This is a good reference for those looking into purchasing whisky - especially with the price of some of these whiskies! The only reason this isn't a five star is that the book is very slim and many descriptions are very brief and vague. And the other thing is that you are really relying on one person's opinion, much like wine ratings. Murray does have his own taste and style he appreciates and he makes this obvious. This is especially notable when looking at Lowland or unpeated Scotch which tends to be automatically lower in score.Still, it is a good reference, and if he rates something highly, it is well worth checking out. If he rates it low, it might still be good, but it would be more of a personal preference of the individual at that point.
Buy this as a good reference but understand that this should be used as a reference and not the final decision maker in what whisky to buy. If you like Bruichladdich (like I do) then who cares what scores it gets!

Jim Murray Whisky Bible 2011 by Murray Jim Paperback Jim Murray 9780955472954 Books Reviews
Extremely helpful to narrow down ones tastes from the different regions of Scotland and learn a little bit about what to expect besides the tasting notes of the bottle which can be cleverly hidden or sometimes not tell the full story of the whisky inside.
Some entries are very brief and carried over from previous years, but I've found that most often the overall rating instead of price (not contained in this book) is a strong indicator if I will like or dislike a particular dram according to my tastes.
I highly advise keeping a list or using some ribbon to mark certain distillery pages that you will refer to often.
Lastly, and probably most importantly, expect your spending budget on scotch whisky to increase by reading this book.
Every whisky ever bottled gets a good run-down (but there's no introduction about whisky itself, its history or anything).
(And then there's the photo of Murray on the cover- it's a real caution! He looks like death warmed up. A man is not meant to drink this much whisky.) (But at least he's shared the knowledge he's gained with us!)
really good and fun book. Unlike many "reviewers" and critics of everything from whiskey to art, not only does this guy love what he's doing, but he knows what he's doing, and he's not that condescending. He's no snob. I get the feeling he likes bourbon more than single malt scotch, and even if not, it hardly plays second violin to SMS. And he clearly seems to favor blends over SMalts! Wow. I get the feeling he does this because he loves whiskey, not because he has a bone to pick with the ignorami of the world.
Only negative? tinylittle print....
I buy a copy of this book every 2-3 yrs. It is very helpful in getting the best bang for your buck when buying whiskey. With a little study you can get a better drink at a significantly lower price than the highly advertised bottles.
An amazing amount of work (and tasting) has gone into this year's Whisky Bible - including new cover artwork. The "Bible" is a small format book, taller than a typical digest, and packed from cover to cover with some of the best ratings you'll find in the industry. Jim Murray has a segmented view concerning his ratings as each is a combined score from four different categories nose, taste, finish and overall balance; with each category contributing a possible 25 points to the overall mark. The printing is done in two color - black with red for emphasized information and headings - and while the font-size can be considered small it is amazingly easy to read. Maps lead each chapter illustrating a distilling region, and unlike some whisky references Murray's "Bible" really is about whisky, not just scotch. The "Bible" starts in Scotland but progresses onto Irish, American, Canadian, Japanese, European and finally World whiskies. Each entry is a an amazingly compact review of an expression, including various batches of the same expression, which contain bottling information (official bottling, independent bottling, and date of distilling and bottling if available), ABV percentages, for limited expressions the number of bottles produced, if a tasting is new to this year's bible or was re-tasted, and of course individual notes on each scoring category nose, taste, finish and overall balance; this book has it all! If you're a whisky fan, know someone who is, or are just starting to discover whiskies (perhaps looking to expand your palate) this is a must-buy.
Fantastic book. It's quite unique to taste thousands of whiskies and actually know how to classify them according to color, nose, palate, and finish. He's really got this down to a science. I make reference to his book every time I conduct a whisky tasting event.
First let me say that I find my palate is very much aligned with authors, so for me it's a phenomenal guide to purchasing some awesome whisky at great prices. It has saved time and money - and led to some outstanding whiskies that I may have otherwise overlooked. For many people they associate price and age with the quality of whisky - this is clearly not true and Jim Murray's Bible puts an exclamation point on it by identifying diamonds that you can find at great prices. It doesn't list all whiskies available but sure hits most. One thing I wish he would do is to date his reviews, I say this because whisky is not consistent from year to year, it may differ in alcohol percentage, quality of barrels etc. however, he does a decent job in trying to capture changes in his later tastings. For the Scottish whisky he does seem to favor the peaty whiskies, but has been very fair with other regions. I have hosted some blind tastings with fellow enthusiasts, and what is clear is Jim Murray nails it time and again. A must have book.
